The Gayla: Rocking and Rolling in Independence

Monday, February 19, 2018

Deb Crawford, grand-daughter of the founders of the Gayla, will present the history of the ballroom.

Deb Crawford, grand-daughter of Gayla founders Joe and Orpha Schmit, will present a comprehensive history of the ballroom which was built in Independence in 1955 and endured until being destroyed by fire in 1983. Crawford and other area residents associated with the Independence landmark will take the audience back in time to this era of big band, country, and rock and roll music with their stories, pictures, and other artifacts. The public is also invited to bring their stories and memorabilia to share.

This presentation is part of the Independence Public Library’s One Book One Independence (OBOI) programming featuring Stars Over Clear Lake by Loretta Ellsworth. Crawford’s presentation will be in the Community Room at the library beginning at 6:30 pm.
