Now that the fall season is here and the leaves are starting to fall, the Independence Police Department would like to take the time to remind members of the community of some important information regarding property clean up.
Per City Ordinance it is unlawful to place grass, leaves, or other yard waste within any street or alley. Burning these materials within any curb and gutter or any paved street or alley is also strictly prohibited.
Please also take notice for those that wish to burn yard waste, this is restricted to two one-week periods in the fall and a ten-day period in the spring only by proclamation of the Mayor. These burning times are from sunrise to sunset. Please take the extra time to insure you are burning during the appropriate time.
A violation of these ordinances results in a citation. The first offense faces a fine amount not to exceed $750. The second Offense results in a fine not to exceed $1000.
If anyone has any questions or concerns about this or any other property maintenance issues, please contact the Independence Police Department or Code Enforcement Officer Brian Lau at 319-334-2520.
